The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists reported that at least three manufacturers of amoxicillin are experiencing supply shortages.
Nine things to know:
1. The shortage was reported by the organization Nov. 18.
2. The shortages primarily affect amoxicillin oral suspension products used in pediatric patients, the ADA reported Dec. 7.
3. The shortages include 14 from Hikma Pharmaceuticals, 18 from Sandoz and 11 from Teva Pharmaceutical Industries in the form of tablets, powder and capsules.
4. The three drugmakers did not provide reasons for the shortages.
5. Aurobindo Pharma refused to provide availability information, the ASHSP said.
6. Rising Pharmaceuticals has capsules and tablets available.
7. Teva has some oral powders, capsules and tablets available. The company is releasing supplies as they become available, with back-ordered products estimated to be released in early December through late February.
8. Hikma is limiting new orders until its shortages are resolved.
9. Sandoz has a limited supply of some products available and others on back order, which do not have an estimated release date.
