Bill to alleviate dental school staffing shortages passes Georgia House committee

The Georgia House Health Committee unanimously passed a bill to help dental schools in Augusta and Savannah, Ga., to recruit faculty members, according to a Feb. 20 report from Savannah Morning News.

HB 322 allows dentists from other states, countries and territories to apply for an instructor's license to teach at accredited dental programs in Georgia.

In 2024, the state legislature allocated $178 million to establish a dental school at Georgia Southern University's Armstrong Campus in Savannah.

Dentists who receive a teaching license through the bill will not be allowed to practice dentistry outside the scope of the dental school.

The bill was introduced by state Rep. Lee Hawkins.
