The dental industry is continuing to work through staffing problems, with the U.S. needing more than 10,000 dental practitioners to fill shortages.
Here are 12 colleges and universities addressing dental staffing issues that Becker's has reported on since Aug. 23:
1. The University of Maine at Augusta opened an expanded dental education clinic.
2. Wichita (Kan.) State University is looking into opening a dental school, which would be the first in Kansas.
3. Orem-based Utah Valley University opened a dental hygiene lab and community dental clinic to train dental hygienists.
4. The University of Washington School of Dentistry signed a lease to establish an oral healthcare training center.
5. Cleveland-based Northeast Ohio Medical University began construction on its Bitonte College of Dentistry.
6. The University of Pikeville (Ky.) broke ground on its upcoming dental school.
7. Fresno (Calif.) City College is offering a Bachelor of Science degree in dental hygiene for the first time.
8. The Touro College of Dental Medicine at New York Medical College started construction of the first dental school in New Mexico.
9. The High Point (N.C.) University Workman School of Dental Medicine welcomed its first class of students.
10. Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences in Yakima, Wash., held a grand opening for its dental school.
11. Colorado Mountain College Vail Valley at Edwards launched a new dental hygiene program and opened a new facility for the program.
12. Grants Pass, Ore.-based Rogue Community College received accreditation from the Commission on Dental Accreditation for its new dental hygiene program.
