Marquette dental grads 1st in U.S. to receive 'privilege diplomas'

Graduates from the Milwaukee-based Marquette University School of Dentistry became the first class in the U.S. to receive 'privilege diplomas', according to a May 10 report by CBS 58.

The diplomas allow the graduates to begin practicing dentistry in Wisconsin almost immediately following graduation, as the state removed the requirement for young dentists to pass a written and practical national examination in order to obtain a license.

With the diploma, the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services guarantees graduates will receive their license within three days of graduating.

The program is designed to expand the number of healthcare professionals, including dentists, in Wisconsin.

There were 24 total graduates in the dental school's 2024 class, the report said.
