South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem signed a bill that expands the ability to practice as a dental hygienist under the supervision of a dentist.
Under House Bill 1074, a dental hygienist can provide preventive and therapeutic services if the following conditions are met:
- Possesses a license to practice in South Dakota.
- Has a collaborative agreement with a dentist.
- Has demonstrated knowledge of medical and dental emergencies and their management; infection control; pharmacology; disease transmission; management of early childhood cavities; and management of special needs populations.
The board will decide the required fee, which will not exceed $30; the minimum requirement for a collaborative agreement; preventive and therapeutic services that may be performed; location or facilities where the services may be performed; and what evidence is required to demonstrate sufficient knowledge.
