The University of Maine Augusta will expand its Lewiston clinic with a $655,000 grant, according to an Oct. 18 report by ABC affiliate WMTW.
The expansion will allow the center to double the number of students in the dental hygiene and dental assistant programs.
With more hygienists and assistants at the clinic, more patients will be able to receive dental care.
The increased enrollment will help combat the state's lack of hygienists and assistants. Maine has 1,090 dental hygienists and 1,230 dental assistants, according to 2022 data from the Bureau of Labor Statics.
Funding for the grant was provided by Northeast Delta Dental, the report said.
