Licensing barriers are making it difficult for more dental therapists to practice in the state, the Lund Report reported April 25.
Four things to know:
1. Oregon legislators authorized dental therapists to practice in the state in 2021 as a way to alleviate workforce shortages and expand care in underserved areas.
2. Only 13 dental therapists have been licensed in the state so far through two pilot programs, according to the Oregon Dentistry Board.
3. Two pilot programs providing certification will end in 20 months and there is no other accredited training program in the state, meaning prospective dental therapists must be trained at an accredited program in Alaska or Washington to be licensed.
4. A training program being developed at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore., needs $1 million in funding before it can move forward. If the program is approved and accredited, the school could admit its first class in the fall of 2025 and students would graduate by 2028.
