A coalition of more than 70 organizations wrote a letter urging congressional leaders to protect the Medicaid program, according to a March 13 news release from the American Dental Association.

Here are five things to know:

  1. The letter highlighted the role that Medicaid plays in providing access to dental care and how potential cuts could impact the oral health of individuals.
  2. Almost three-quarters of voters support better oral healthcare access through Medicaid, according to the letter.
  3. Adult dental services are considered “optional” for each state, which could lead to funding for adult services being cut or reduced.
  4. Even though child dental services are mandatory, it could still be impacted by budget cuts.
  5. The letter was led by FamiliesUSA, a consumer health advocacy organization.
