Illinois passes law requiring insurers to cover major jaw injury treatments

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker signed a bill into law that guarantees individuals with major jaw injuries access to essential medical treatment.

Senate Bill 3305 requires individual and group insurance policies to cover medically necessary treatments for jaw injuries, including oral and facial surgery, dental implants and prosthetics, according to an Aug. 29 news release from the Illinois State Dental Association.

Insurance companies are not allowed to deny claims and label necessary treatments as "cosmetic" and refuse to cover the treatment costs under the bill, including jaw treatments that are required due to injuries caused by cancer.

The legislation was sponsored by Illinois state Sen. Laura Fine and state Rep. Jennifer Gong-Gershowitz, the release said.
