Medi-Cal launches campaign to promote children's oral health

Medi-Cal and the California Department of Health Care Services launched Sealants for a Healthy Smile, a campaign to promote the use of sealants as a preventive measure against tooth decay.

The campaign also encourages parents and guardians to bring their children to a dentist on a regular basis to prevent tooth decay and gum disease, according to a July 26 news release.

Through the initiative, a mobile dental clinic van will be sent to provide sealants to children in rural areas.

Medi-Cal, California's Medicaid program, provides a variety dental services for its members, including sealants at low to no cost, according to the release.

Sealants can cut down on 80 percent of cavities that form in the back teeth, according to Jayanth Kumar, DDS, California's dental director.
