Why 78% of Florida dentists are not Medicaid providers

Only 21.9 percent of dentists in Florida are enrolled as Medicaid providers, according to a survey of dentists conducted by the state Department of Health. 

Inadequate reimbursement is the main reason most Florida dentists are not Medicaid providers, according to the 10,869 respondents who participated in the survey, published March 1.

Here are the top 10 reasons why Florida dentists are not enrolled in Medicaid or are not accepting new Medicaid patients:

1. Inadequate reimbursement: 70.5 percent

2. Too much paperwork: 36.9 percent

3. Frequent changes in Florida Medicaid rules: 28.7 percent

4. Slow reimbursement: 28 percent

5. Billing requirements: 26.2 percent

6. Specialty/adult primary practice services not reimbursed: 15.7 percent

7. Medicaid population characteristics: 15.3 percent

8. Concerned about liability issues: 15.2 percent

9. Concerned about fraud issues: 13.2 percent 

9. Practice is at full capacity: 13.2 percent
