5 key considerations when sedating pediatric patients

After recent tragic deaths of pediatric patients during dental procedures, the American Academy of Pediatrics is bringing awareness to the harms of sedating children, reports TODAY.

While it is unclear the exact number of children who have died in the U.S. during dental procedures, a Dallas Morning News investigation found that a dental patients dies nearly every other day in the U.S.

Here are five key considerations when administering anesthesia:

1. Children are more susceptible to choke while unconscious or after surgery and often times parents are unaware of the risks of anesthesia.

2. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry advises using extreme caution when sedating children less than three and for children under the age of two to go to a hospital setting for the procedure.

3. Procedures done in outpatient settings do not always have anesthesiologist on hand while at an ambulatory surgery center an anesthesiologist is present.

4. Children come out of sedation slower than adults, meaning prolonged observation is necessary.

5. Instead of using general anesthesia, dentists can use local anesthesia such as Novocain and numbing gels to treat pediatric patients.
