Dentists recommend antibiotic prophylaxis for some patients: 3 observations

Dentists may prescribe antibiotic prophylaxis to patients at high risk for bacterial infection, according to News-Medical.

Here are three observations:

1. The American Heart Association recommends the antibiotics for patients with certain heart conditions.

2. Patients with artificial valves, a heart transplant in which a problem has developed, infection of the lining of the heart or heart conditions that are present from birth are viable candidates for the antibiotics.

3. The AHA advises patients to talk with their dentists if they are unsure about taking the premedication.
