Most children at higher risk of developing cavities not receiving recommended preventive dental care: 6 takeaways

A study found nearly two-thirds of children who are at higher risk of developing cavities are not obtaining recommended preventative dental care, according to News-Medical.

The study analyzed more than 97 million dental claims.

Here are six takeaways:

1. Researchers found 27 percent of children through age 18 are at an increased risk of developing cavities.

2. Of those children, 65 percent did not obtain two fluoride treatments each year.

3. Sixty-eight percent of those children aged six to nine years old did not receive sealants on their first permanent molars.

4. Of those children, 85 percent of those ages 10 to 14 didn't receive sealants on their second permanent molars.

5. In the study, nearly 25 percent of children ages three to 18 did not visit the dentist at all.

6. Researchers found children younger than three are the least likely to see a dentist.
