In 2010, Olya Banchik, DDS, created "Smiles for Survivors" to treat breast cancer patients and survivors for oral health issues, according to Las Vegas Review-Journal.
Here are five takeaways:
1. The program aims to help patients who may not have the financial capabilities to cover much-needed dental care.
2. Smiles for Survivors serves patients in Las Vegas as well as in Washington and Delaware cities, Phoenix and Nashville, Tenn.
3. The program is comprised of 10 dentists who administer care in Las Vegas and four other dentists who provide care in the other cities.
4. Through the program, dentists have administered free care for 16 patients who had 129 different procedures. These procedures took a total of 80 hours worth of work throughout the years.
5. Some of the side effects of chemotherapy include tooth decay, infections, mouth sores and gum disease.
