Periodontitis may not relate to HPV in oral rinse specimens: 3 key notes

A recent Journal of the American Dental Association study found that although oral human papillomavirus is a "serious concern," researchers found periodontitis was not related to HPV presence in oral rinse specimens.

Here are three key notes:

1. Using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data including participants who had periodontal and HPV data, researchers aimed to determine if an association of the presence of HPV in oral rinse specimens and periodontal disease exists.

2. According to the study, "the adjusted odds ratio for the presence of HPV in oral rinse specimens with relation to periodontal disease was 1.04."

3. However, researchers failed to reject the hypothesis that there is no association of HPV in oral rinse specimens and periodontitis.
