The CDC says 86 million Americans have prediabetes, but it can be reversed if detected early.
Shiela Strauss, PhD, MA, BS, assistant professor and co-director of Statistics and Data Management Core at NYU College of Nursing and Dentistry, tells New York 1 that diabetes is an epidemic that in part can be slowed by having dentists screen for diabetes.
Dentists can screen by testing blood collected from gums for hemoglobin A1c, which Dr. Strauss says is equally as effective as blood from a patient's finger.
