Thurston Group, a private equity-backed firm, has been making waves in the DSO industry by launching and supporting numerous specialty dental organizations.
The company closed 65 deals in the dental and healthcare space, acquiring more than $170 million in revenue from those transactions in the first half of 2022, displaying its size and reach.
The largest dental organization backed by Thurston Group is Smile Doctors, an orthodontics-focused dental partnership organization, which has more than 400 affiliated practices across its network of 28 states. The company has added more than 20 locations this year and raised more than $550 million in July to continue its expansion.
Irving, Texas-based U.S. Oral Surgery Management, also backed by Thurston Group, has made numerous additions in 2023, supporting more than 180 practices across 26 states.
Most recently, it launched Modis Dental Partners, a dental partnership organization focused on partnering and expanding with dental practices that place an emphasis on dental implants.
The group also created Richmond Hill, Ga.-based SGA Dental Partners through the merger of Dental Partners of Southwest Georgia, Garner Dental Group and South Georgia Dental Management in March 2022. The group was able to reach the 100 practice mark in just over one year, hitting the milestone in May 2023.
Specialized Dental Partners, formerly known as U.S. Endo Partners, places an emphasis on endodontics, periodontics and oral and maxillofacial surgery practices. The DSO added eight practices over a two month span earlier this year.
Tempe, Ariz.-based Gen4 Dental Partners added 40 practices and partnered with 73 partner doctors during 2022.
Thurston Group is clearly a big player in the specialty-focused dental partnership organization, and its supported companies show no signs of slowing down.
