Southfield, Mich.-based Great Expressions Dental Centers recently experienced a data security incident in which patient data was compromised.
The organization launched an investigation after experiencing unusual activity on its systems, according to a notice on the company's website. The investigation concluded that an unauthorized party accessed its systems from Feb. 17 to Feb. 22 and may have accessed or removed some files.
The company determined April 19 that the compromised files contained information belonging to some patients, possibly including identifying information, financial information, medical and dental history, treatment plans and health insurance information. The company's electronic medical records system was not involved in the breach.
More than 500 patients were affected by the breach, according to a May 12 filing with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights breach portal.
The organization began notifying patients whose information may have been involved in the incident May 12. It recommended that patients review healthcare and financial statements and report any unauthorized activity.
Great Expressions Dental Centers said it implemented additional safeguards and security measures to protect its systems and prevent future incidents.
