Heartland Dental recap: 21 big moves in the last 5 years

Effingham, Ill.-based Heartland Dental is one of the largest DSOs in the U.S., with more than 2,400 dentists and 1,600 practices across 38 states in its network. 

Here are the biggest moves the company has made since 2017:

2017

  • Heartland Dental was listed on Inc. 5000's list of the fastest growing private companies in the U.S. for the seventh year.
  • Heartland Dental created a relief fund for dentists affected by Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma.
  • Heartland Dental added its 800th supported location.

2018

  • In April, Elearning! Magazine included Heartland Dental on its list of High Performers for 2018, which recognizes companies who implement learning management systems and convert more than 90 percent of in-person training into online learning environments.
  • Heartland Dental and KKR finalized its agreement for KKR to acquire majority interest in Heartland Dental from the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan.
  • In May, the company launched a leadership summit for 2019 and 2020 dental student graduates to help them develop leadership skills, network with colleagues and establish goals.
  • Heartland opened a non-clinical support office in Indianapolis in August.
  • In September, the company opened a dental hygiene lab at Lake Land College as a gift to the Mattoon, Ill.-based school.
  • In October, Heartland Dental completed its training of 1,300 dentists in leadership and clinical activities, including digital scanning, dental implants, Invisalign, laser dentistry, endodontics and advanced oral surgery.
  • Heartland Dental concluded the year with 100 newly constructed and acquired offices added to its network.

2019

  • In September, the company opened a non-clinical support office in St. Louis with plans to add 100 jobs to the location in five years.
  • In December, Heartland Dental became the first DSO in the U.S. to support 1,000 practices.

2020

  • In October, the company announced it had added more than 100 new dentists to its network.
  • In December, the company acquired Southfield, Mich.-based Tru Family Dental, a regional DSO consisting of 10 Illinois offices and 13 Michigan offices.

2021

  • In February, Heartland Dental extended its supply contract with Envista Holdings for four years.
  • Stacy DeWalt was appointed chief marketing officer and executive vice president.
  • In June, Heartland Dental launched several diversity initiatives to strengthen the work environment for its employees, including training programs to enhance the staff recruitment process, employee resource groups and the appointment of Nick Hornsberry as the organization's diversity, equity and inclusion manager. 
  • The company finished 2021 with 424 practices added to its network, including the acquisition of Wakefield, Mass.-based DSO American Dental Partners. 

2022

  • In April, Heartland Dental selected Sarah Jackson to be its chief human resources officer.
  • Heartland Dental introduced its new brand campaign, Doctor Difference, celebrating its culture and business model.
  • Heartland Dental announced in July that it would provide support for a merger of three Canadian dental companies to create the largest DSO in the country.
