Below are 14 acquisitions of or by DSOs in 2020, as reported by Becker's Dental+DSO Review.
Editor's note: This list is not exhaustive. It includes moves identified as acquisitions and excludes affiliations, partnerships or expansions.
1. Madison Heights, Mich.-based SmilePartners-USA acquired Chicago-based Pedia's 14 locations and three other dental practices across the Detroit and Atlanta metropolitan areas. SmilePartners is a portfolio company of a private equity firm.
2. Absolute Dental Group acquired Aces Braces and Dental. The combined Las Vegas-based organizations represent about 100 dentists and hygienists, 350 team members and 28 practices throughout the state.
3. The Dentist Entrepreneur Organization acquired DSO Secrets. The Austin, Texas-based DEO serves dentist-entrepreneurs and leaders of emerging dental groups and DSOs.
4. Boca Raton, Fla.-based Sage Dental acquired at least seven new dental practices in Florida, expanding the total number of locations to almost 70 across Florida and Georgia.
5. Dallas-based Deca Dental Group expanded into a third state through its acquisition of Reign Dental, a Seattle-based DSO. Deca has grown to include about 100 practices across Texas, Florida and now Washington.
6. Jonesboro, Ark.-based GPS Dental acquired three dental practices across three states during the first quarter of 2021. The additions were ADC of Joplin (Mo.), Nashville, Tenn.-based Hermitage Dental Group and Ardmore, Okla.-based Walnut Ranch Dental Spa.
7. Bethlehem, Pa.-based Spark Orthodontics acquired Nashville-based Cumberland Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics of Tennessee. The acquisition makes Spark Orthodontics a multispecialty practice covering dental and orthodontic services for patients as young as 18 months.
8. Madison, Wis.-based Cherry Tree Dental acquired its first practice outside of Wisconsin — Richard Patelski DDS Family and General Dentistry in Downers Grove, Ill. Cherry Tree Dental has 33 locations in 10 Wisconsin cities and Downers Grove and uses an acquisition and office consolidation strategy dedicated to small, one- or two-dentist practices.
9. Dental partnership organization Empire Dental Arts acquired Palladino DDS & Associates, a 30-year-old practice in Mayfield Heights, Ohio. Empire, established in 2017 and based in Mentor, Ohio, provides operational services and support to practices in northeast Ohio.
10. New Hyde Park, N.Y.-based Dental365 was acquired by private equity firm the Jordan Company through its Resolute Fund. The firm acquired the DSO from founding shareholders Scott Asnis, DDS, and David Kim, MD. At the time of acquisition, Dental365 had nearly 70 locations across New York, Connecticut and New Jersey.
11. Little Rock, Ark.-based Rock Dental Brands acquired nine dental practices across Arkansas, Tennessee and Missouri.
12. Aliso Viejo, Calif.-based Onsite Dental acquired mobile dental firm Henry The Dentist. The acquisition expands the venture-backed DSO's services. In addition to mobile clinics, the company provides services at fixed locations and pop-up practices. Onsite Dental services 150 clients in 14 states.
13. Trevose, Pa.-based Simply Beautiful Smiles acquired Olin Dental Group. Olin Dental Group is based in Rahway, N.J., and has more than 25 locations.
14. Dentist Entrepreneur Organization acquired both Traction for Dental and JoyFull People. Traction for Dental is the only certified entrepreneurial operating system implementation business focused solely on multilocation dental companies. Its sister company, JoyFull People, offers an online curriculum for finding, managing and growing dental teams.
