A coalition of healthcare and dental organizations expressed opposition to the proposed Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act Security Rule, according to a March 10 news release from the American Dental Association.
Here are five things for dental professionals to know:
- The rule creates national standards to protect electronic health information that is generated, received, used or maintained by a covered entity.
- According to the coalition, the rule would place a financial strain on hospitals and health systems, increase healthcare costs for patients and slow healthcare innovations.
- The organizations said that the proposal would not improve cybersecurity and conflict with existing law in a joint letter addressed to President Donald Trump and HHS secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
- The coalition warned that high compliance costs could cause smaller healthcare providers to close or cut services.
- The Biden administration projected that the proposal would cost $9 billion in the first year and $6 billion in years two through five.
