A coalition of healthcare and dental organizations expressed opposition to the proposed Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act Security Rule, according to a March 10 news release from the American Dental Association.

Here are five things for dental professionals to know:

  1. The rule creates national standards to protect electronic health information that is generated, received, used or maintained by a covered entity.
  2. According to the coalition, the rule would place a financial strain on hospitals and health systems, increase healthcare costs for patients and slow healthcare innovations.
  3. The organizations said that the proposal would not improve cybersecurity and conflict with existing law in a joint letter addressed to President Donald Trump and HHS secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
  4. The coalition warned that high compliance costs could cause smaller healthcare providers to close or cut services.
  5. The Biden administration projected that the proposal would cost $9 billion in the first year and $6 billion in years two through five.
