Texas dentist unable to retire because of student loan payments: 8 notes

Gilda Casas, DDS, says her student loan payments are threatening her ability to retire, NBC affiliate News 4 San Antonio reported Jan. 8.

Eight notes:

1. Dr. Casas, 65, borrowed $124,000 for dental school in 2001.

2. Dr. Casas pays more than $1,000 each month toward her student loan and has repaid more than $189,000 so far.

3. Documents reportedly show Dr. Casas still owes more than $101,000 despite her previous payments.

4. Dr. Casas told News 4 San Antonio that neither her lender, Credit Human, nor the loan servicer, Sloan Servicing, has explained why her remaining balance remains high.

5. Attorney Bill Clanton, who reviewed Dr. Casas' loan, told News 4 San Antonio that she initially opted for smaller payments, which increased her interest.

6. Of the $189,000 Dr. Casas has paid, only $41,000 went toward the principal, while $148,000 covered interest and fees.

7. Credit Human told News 4 San Antonio that it is researching Dr. Casas’ loan, and would follow up with her to provide additional information and resources.

8. The Federal Student Aid Office is also reportedly looking into Dr. Casas' loan.
