Virginia dentist's license suspended for self-prescribing controlled drugs

The Virginia Board of Dentistry has suspended the dental license of Christina Mills, DDS, for prescribing controlled substances to herself and her children for non-therapeutic purposes.

The board alleges that Dr. Mills used the alias "Christina Gimbel" to pick up the prescriptions for herself and her three children without any dental purpose and without any corresponding treatment records.

On Feb. 29, the Virginia Department of Health Professionals received a complaint from a pharmacist, who discovered that signature for Christina Gimbel and Dr. Mills looked similar and the two had the same driver's license numbers.

An investigation revealed that from Jan. 1, 2016 through June 20, Dr. Mills was prescribed and received 2,214 Percocet pills, 126 Vicodin pills, 269 pills of Schedule II controlled narcotic pain drugs, 930 pills of Adderall and 860 pills of Xanax using the alias.

In an interview with a DHP investigator on June 21, Dr. Mills claimed that "Christina Gimbel" was a patient and not an alias used to divert controlled substances. She also claimed that the three adult children were sons of Christina Gimbel and denied that they were her children.

From Jan. 11, 1999 through Jan. 15, Dr. Mills documented 26 dates of service where she or a dental hygienist performed treatment on Christina Gimbel.

In an Aug. 14 interview with an investigator, Dr. Mills admitted that she was Christina Gimbel and that she created false patient records under the name.

The board claims that Dr. Mills is a "substantial danger to public health or safety", which warrants the suspension of her dental license.
