California tackles dentistry issues: 4 new laws

California has passed several laws this year to improve workforce shortages, boost funding for dental initiatives and increase accessibility. 

Here are four dentistry-related laws passed in California in 2024:

1. SB 1453 removes excessive testing and work experience requirements for orthodontic assistant permit certification.

2. Proposition 35 was approved by California voters Nov. 5th to boost funding for dental and other healthcare services. 

3. The Medi-Cal Dental program implemented online care coordination to make dental care more accessible in California.

4. Senate Bill 1453 expands licensure pathways for dental assistants and updates the scope of practice for dental assistants.
