An Idaho man was recently sentenced for a hacking and extortion scheme that involved several organizations and businesses, including a Florida orthodontics office.
Robert Purbeck, 45, hacked into the computer servers of 19 victims in the U.S., stealing the personally identifiable information of more than 132,000 people. He also attempted to extort a Florida orthodontist for Bitcoin payment by threatening to disclose stolen patient records and other information, according to a Nov. 13 news release from the Department of Justice.
Mr. Purbeck harassed the orthodontist and his patients for 10 days with threatening emails and text messages in an attempt to get a Bitcoin payment.
Mr. Purbeck was sentenced to 10 years in prison and was ordered to pay $1,048,702.98 in restitution to his victims. He was also given three years of supervised release.
