The University at Buffalo (N.Y.) School of Dental Medicine received a $7.38 million grant to build a new microbiome research facility.
The school will develop a 4,000-square-foot facility to support research on the oral microbiome, with studies focused on its links to systemic diseases. Researchers will use germ-free mice to examine how oral bacteria influence health conditions throughout the body, according to a Nov. 7 news release.
The grant was awarded by the National Institutes of Health's Office of Research Infrastructure Programs.
Expected to open within five years, the facility will be the only one of its kind in Western New York, the release said.
