The Dental College of Georgia has reopened and is working to support its community after Hurricane Helene.
Six notes:
1. Hurricane Helene made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane the night of Sept. 26, causing widespread damage in the Southeast and leading to the deaths of more than 200 people so far.
2. The Dental College of Georgia moved students to remote learning and canceled all dental appointments for a week due to damage from the storm.
3. The Augusta-based college reopened to employees and students Oct. 7, but patient care for predoctoral students remained canceled through the week.
4. Patient care for resident and faculty clinics was canceled through Oct. 9, according to a Facebook post from the college.
5. The Georgia Dental Association gave the dental school $9,000 to help the college provide daily lunches and find new housing for displaced students, according to an Oct. 11 news release from the ADA.
6. The GDA also gave out 1,500 dental hygiene kits to communities and awarded $10,000 in grants to help dentists recover from the hurricane.
