Medicaid disenrollment leads to jump in emergency room visits: 4 notes for dental leaders

The end of continuous Medicaid enrollment has led to an increase in the number of uninsured emergency room visits, according to new data released by Epic Research.

Researchers studied 196 million emergency encounters between January 2017 and June 2024 to create the report.

Four notes:

1. The continuous enrollment requirement enacted during the COVID-19 pandemic ended March 31, 2023.

2. About 25.1 million people had been disenrolled from Medicaid as of Aug. 23

3. Self-pay emergency visits have increased in all age groups since the end of Medicaid continuous enrollment.

4. The age group that saw the largest increase was children under 18 years old. This age group experienced a 60% increase in self-pay emergency room visits.
