Washington dentist's sedation permit indefinitely suspended following patient death

The Washington Dental Quality Assurance Commission indefinitely suspended the moderate sedation with parenteral agents permit of Thi Nguyen, DDS.

Dr. Nguyen did not accurately assess a patient's level of risk resulting in a poor outcome in June 2022, according to a Sept. 10 news release.

The commission originally suspended Dr. Nguyen's permit in November 2023 following the death of a patient in July 2022, when Dr. Nguyen did not provide enough medication to reverse the effects of sedatives used during the procedure.

Before he can petition for reinstatement, Dr. Nguyen must submit a 10,000-word report on risk assessments for patients with comorbidities, medical consultation and safe sedation, as well as pass a jurisprudence exam.

In addition, Dr. Nguyen must successfully complete an ethics exam, attend two annual sessions of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology and pass at least one SIM MAN course, the release said.
