Former dentist who paid $8.5M for Medicaid fraud sentenced for violating probation

A former Potomac, Md., dentist was sentenced for violating the terms of his probation imposed in February.

Seyed Tofigh, DDS, who previously had his dental license suspended, was attempting to apply for dentistry positions at practices in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C., using an altered license, according to an Aug. 30 news release from Maryland attorney general's office.

Dr. Tofigh also applied to practice dentistry in Washington, D.C., by using an altered report from the National Practitioners Database that did not disclose his criminal conviction or actions taken with respect to his license.

In addition, Dr. Tofigh violated the probation terms by leaving his home without permission and traveling to unapproved locations, the release said.

In February, Dr. Tofigh was ordered to pay $8.5 million in restitution for Medicaid fraud. He was originally sentenced to 18 months of home detention, with his remaining 3.5 years suspended, and five years' probation.

The Maryland Board of Dental Examiners revoked Dr. Tofigh's license in 2015 after finding he failed to keep proper records and provided substandard treatment. From 2015 through 2022, Dr. Tofigh continued practicing, using the information of former colleagues and family members who were dentists to submit Medicaid claims.
