Kentucky dentist arrested in murder case allowed to continue managing practice

A Kentucky dentist arrested in connection with a murder that took place in 2023 will be able to continue managing his dental practice, CBS affiliate WYMT reported Aug. 19.

Michael McKinney Jr., DMD, is the owner of Floyd County Smiles in Minnie and Prestonsburg, Ky. He was arrested July 30 and charged with seven counts of complicity to tampering with physical evidence in connection to the 2023 murder of Amber Spradlin. Dr. McKinney pleaded not guilty to the charges July 31, the Appalachian News-Express reported.

An eighth tampering charge was added Aug. 19, for which Dr. McKinney also pleaded not guilty.

Dr. McKinney was placed on home incarceration after being released on a $250,000 cash bond. His attorney recently submitted a motion to approve his return to work within a set schedule in order to manage Floyd County Smiles. A judge approved the request Aug. 19.

The Kentucky Board of Dentistry issued an immediate temporary suspension of Dr. McKinney's license earlier this month as it investigates the dentist's "competency to practice."
