15 dental school updates in 1 month

Here are 15 recent dental school updates, including new programs and funding, that Becker's has reported on since July 12.

1. Three dental schools in Illinois earned endowments from the Illinois State Dental Society.

2. The University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry launched the first pediatric dental residency program in the state.

3. Des Moines (Iowa) Area Community College is set to construct a new building for its dental hygiene and assisting programs.

4. Eatontown, N.J.-based ACI Medical & Dental School is set to graduate the largest class in its 19-year history.

5. Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio, invested $2.6 million in upgrading its dental simulation clinic.

6. New Orleans-based LSU Health appointed John Gallo, DDS, dean of its School of Dentistry.

7. The University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco partnered with Stanford (Calif.) Medicine to expand specialty care for oral health and hearing conditions. 

8. The University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry plans to open a satellite clinic in Decatur, Ala., to expand accessibility to dental services.

9. Effingham, Ill.-based Heartland Dental and Concorde Career Colleges partnered to open campuses to train dental hygienists and dental assistants. 

10. Gwen Hlava, professor and chair of the dental hygiene department at the Lincoln, Neb.-based University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry, retired after serving the school for 50 years.

11. Batesville, Ark.-based Lyon College broke ground the state's first on a dental school.

12. The University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine launched a geriatric dental medicine fellowship program.

13. The University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry opened a dental clinic providing free care to veterans who do not have dental benefits.

14. South Texas College in McAllen is developing an associate of applied science in dental hygiene program, funded by a $1 million grant.

15. Bismarck (N.D.) State College received approval to offer associate degree programs for dental hygiene and dental assisting.
