50-office dental group experiences data breach

Park Dental, which has more than 50 offices in Minnesota and Wisconsin, recently experienced a data breach potentially involving patient information.

The practice said that on Jan. 23, it became aware of unauthorized activity on a limited number of employee email accounts. The practice said it immediately took steps to secure the email accounts and engaged third-party cybersecurity experts to investigate the incident.

The investigation determined there was unauthorized access to a limited number of employee email accounts between Jan. 11 and Jan. 23, during which certain information stored within the email accounts may have been viewed or accessed. The information that may have been accessed includes names, demographic information, medical information, health insurance information and dates of birth. Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers and financial information may have also been accessed for a limited number of people.

The practice noted that the incident only affected its Microsoft 365 cloud system and not its internal computer network or patient records database.

Park Dental is unaware of any identity theft or fraud related to the data incident, according to a notice on the practice's website.
