The Community Foundation of West Kentucky nonprofit is looking to partner with Nashville, Tenn.-based Meharry Medical College to open a medical and dental school in Kentucky, NBC affiliate WPSD Local 6 reported June 11.
Five notes:
1. The nonprofit recently launched a feasibility study questionnaire to learn more about medical and dental care within Western Kentucky.
2. Tony Watkins, CEO of The Community Foundation of West Kentucky, told WPSD that it could cost about $5 million to start a new college in one of the target areas.
3. The medical and dental school could be eligible for federal dollars to help maintain operations.
4. There are currently two dental schools in Kentucky: the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry in Lexington and the University of Louisville School of Dentistry.
5. The University of Pikeville plans to open its Tanner College of Dental Medicine in 2026.
