Former employee of Michigan dental practice sentenced for embezzling $115K+

A former employee of a dental practice in Fort Gratiot, Mich., was sentenced to one year in jail for embezzling more than $115,000 from the practice, according to a June 10 report from the Port Huron Times Herald.

Jennifer Malone worked at Smile Zone Dental, where she made several unauthorized payments to herself starting in 2022. The owners of the practice uncovered the payments when an accountant completed an audit in 2023.

Ms. Malone was originally sentenced in a plea deal with the condition that she would refund $15,000 to the practice by her sentencing data. The money she was planning to use reportedly came from an account that belongs to her current employer's attorney.

Ms. Malone pleaded guilty to embezzling funds from the practice in April.

In addition to the one year in jail, Ms. Malone must serve three years of probation, the release said.
