The top 10% of dental practices in the U.S. bring in more than $17,000 per day, according to Henry Schein One's 2024 Industry Report.
The dental software company collected data and calculated performance benchmarks for more than 2,500 dental practices in the U.S. The report aims to help dental offices measure performance and make informed decisions about their businesses.
Henry Schein One released its third annual report May 28.
"The reason we put out this report is to provide data, and data gives you a baseline. That baseline sometimes tells a good story. Sometimes, more often than not, it tells a really bad story. But guess what? It's an actual baseline to improve," Steven Maroulis, vice president and general manager of analytics and patient experience at Henry Schein One, told Becker's. "The good thing is there are a bunch of different KPIs and metrics, and you'll see varying results between the top 10% and what we see as a median. So there's definitely a big opportunity for growth.
The dental software company pointed out in its report that it saw an increase in hygiene production among the average dental practice, from $1,234 in 2023 to $2,494 in 2024.
The report gave several tips for dental practices to increase their daily gross production, including calculating production goals for providers, implementing scheduling guidelines to allow enough high-production visits each day and making room for emergency appointments.
"The wages for hygienists have increased significantly in the last 12 to 18 months, and definitely post COVID," Mr. Maroulis said. "In order to remain profitable, practices have the need to increase the focus on productivity. They can do this either with team-assisted hygiene or general focus on protocols, such as periodontal care."
Here is how production levels compare between the average dental practice and the top 10% of dental practices:
Average daily gross production per office
Average: $9,991
Top 10%: $17,874
Average daily gross production generated from general providers

Top 10%: $13,225
