Dental industry professionals have been contemplating what the closing of Walmart Health's 51 centers means for providers and patients in need of dental care.
Walmart announced the closing of its health centers April 30, citing a "challenging reimbursement environment" and rising operating costs that resulted in a lack of profitability.
While Walmart's pharmacies and vision centers are not affected by the shut down, the company will soon no longer offer the dental, behavioral, virtual care and other medical services offered at its health centers.
Walmart's Chief Dental Officer Victoria Yu, DDS, who joined the retailer in 2023, said in a LinkedIn post that she was saddened by the news of the closure, but was proud of what the company's dental providers accomplished.
"Our dental teams’ commitment to excellence has not only shaped our company but has also left an indelible mark on the communities we've served and I believe, changed how even the largest healthcare systems view healthcare delivery," Dr. Yu said. "While this chapter may be coming to a close, the legacy of Walmart Dental will live on through the relationships we've built and the smiles we've helped create. I want to express my deepest gratitude to our dedicated team of dentists, staff, and partners who have been instrumental in our success."
Several dental company recruiters have jumped in to help Walmart dental providers transition to new roles.
Walmart said in its announcement that employees affected by the closure are eligible to transfer to other Sam's Club and Walmart locations. Employees will receive 90 days' pay unless they are transferred to another location or exit the company. Severance benefits will also be available for eligible employees.
Janet Hagerman, a dental industry consultant, said she was not surprised by the news because of the company's pricing model.
"What this leaves is a lot of folks in need of good, fairly priced dental care," Hagerman said on LinkedIn. "While discount dentistry is never a good idea, this does present an opportunity for dental professionals to help patients understand the value of dentistry so we can care for their needs."
