HHS recently issued a final rule that streamlines enrollment in Medicaid and CHIP coverage.
The new rule, first proposed in September 2022, aims to remove enrollment barriers and strengthen coverage protection, according to a March 27 news release.
Six notes about the rule:
1. The rule eliminates annual and lifetime limits on children’s coverage under CHIP, and also removes waiting periods for CHIP.
2. Children's CHIP coverage can no longer be blocked if a family is unable to pay premiums.
3. The rule ensures a seamless transition of children from Medicaid to CHIP if their family's income increases.
4. States are now required to provide first-time applicants with at least 15 days to provide additional information and 30 days to return documentation for individuals renewing coverage.
5. States are prohibited from conducting renewals more frequently than every 12 months. They are also prohibited from requiring in-person interviews for older adults and those with disabilities.
6. HHS said additional updates for Medicaid and CHIP regulations are expected later this year to improve managed care and strengthen access.
