Here are two data breaches affecting dental companies that Becker's has reported on since Feb. 23:
1. Kids Care Dental & Orthodontics, which operates 22 offices in California, experienced a data breach potentially affecting the information of its employees and patients. The dental group said that it became aware of unusual activity that disrupted access to certain systems in June 2023. The company then launched an investigation, which revealed that an unknown actor obtained certain data from the practice's network. The practice worked with experts to conduct a review to determine what information was involved, which was completed Feb. 29.
The information that may have been involved in the incident includes identifying information, medical and treatment information, health insurance information and billing information, according to a March 7 notice on the practice's website.
2. Chicago-based Aspen Dental Management suffered a ransomware attack that may have resulted in patient information being accessed. The attack occurred on April 25, 2023. Following the breach, Aspen Dental partnered with third-party cybersecurity experts to investigate the scope of the incident, according to a Feb. 22 news release shared with Becker's.
Information that may have been impacted includes patients' Social Security numbers, driver's license/state ID information, health information, health insurance information, date of birth, financial data, biometric data, and other sensitive information.
