Several dental schools in the U.S. were recently ranked among the best dental schools in the world by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy.
The universities were ranked using five main categories: research output, research influence, international collaboration, research quality and international academic awards.
Here are the deans of six U.S. dental schools included in the top 10 spots in the ranking:
1. Jacques Eduardo Nor, DDS, PhD. Dean of the University of Michigan School of Dentistry (Ann Arbor): Dr. Nor is a former president of the American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research. He has also served as a chair and member of the oral, dental and craniofacial sciences study section of the National Institutes of Health. He also has experience as an editor and editorial board member of several journals.
2. William Giannobile, DDS. Dean of the Harvard University School of Dental Medicine (Boston): Dr. Giannobile has served as dean since September 2020. He is known as a leader in periodontology and is an internationally recognized scholar in oral regenerative medicine, tissue engineering and precision medicine. He also serves as a principal investigator for the Michigan-Pittsburgh-Wyss Regenerative Medicine Resource Center. He is a 2018 recipient of the American Dental Association’s Norton Ross Award for Excellence in Clinical Research.
3. Michael Reddy, DMD. Dean of the University of California San Francisco School of Dentistry: Before joining UCSF in June 2018, Dr. Reddy served as dean of the University of Alabama School of Dentistry for nearly seven years. His clinical expertise includes periodontal therapy and dental implants. He has also served as an examiner for the American Board of Periodontology, an associate editor for the Journal of Periodontology and an editor of Clinical Advances in Periodontics.
4. Janet Guthmiller, DDS, PhD. Dean of the University of North Carolina Adams School of Dentistry (Chapel Hill): Dr. Guthmiller was appointed dean in May 2022 after serving as dean of the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry. Her research focuses on periodontal pathogens and innate antimicrobials. She is a recipient of several awards and has authored many publications. She is also a diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and fellow of the American College of Dentists.
5. Paul Krebsbach, DDS, PhD. Dean of the University of California Los Angeles School of Dentistry: Dr. Krebsbach was appointed dean in June 2016. He has previously served on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research. He is also a past president of the American Association for Dental, Oral and Craniofacial Research. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering.
6. Mark Wolff, DDS, PhD. Dean of the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine (Philadelphia): Dr. Wolff is an advocate and dental provider for individuals with physical, intellectual and developmental disabilities. He has served as the principal or co-principal investigator for several clinical research projects, publishing more than 100 scientific papers and text chapters. He is a past president of the American Association of Oral Biologists.
