A Missouri dentist was recently sentenced to one year in federal prison for concealing more than $617,000 in earnings from the IRS.
Nohaud Naseef Azan, DDS, operates a dental office in Sedalia, Mo. Dr. Azan and his practice were audited in 2011 in connection with the improper deduction of personal expenses on corporate tax returns, according to a March 6 news release from the Department of Justice. In response to the audit and in an effort for his dental office to continue paying for his personal expenses, Dr. Azan cashed checks that patients had written out to the practice or deposited them into a personal bank account. He then failed to report the money from the cashed checks as income on his personal and corporate tax returns.
More than 1,000 checks were cashed or deposited from 2011 through 2018, resulting in $269,517 in total tax loss for the IRS, according to the news release.
Dr. Azan was sentenced to one year and one day in federal prison without parole. He was also ordered to pay $269,517 in restitution to the IRS.
