The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation recently proposed new rule changes that could affect dental anesthesia practices and adjust the Illinois Dental Practice Act.
Here are five things to know:
1. The proposed changes would allow dental anesthesiologists to obtain licenses and promote their services and would require applicants for moderate sedation permits to submit to the state information on 20 cases of intravenous sedation.
2. The rules would also require holders of Permit A for moderate sedation to undergo periodic inspections and evaluations.
3. The proposal could remove weekend anesthesiology courses as a training option for obtaining a moderate sedation permit.
4. The Illinois State Dental Society said Jan. 19 that the rules should align with standards set by the Commission on Dental Accreditation and the American Dental Association.
5. The dental group also suggested that the state department remove the provision for periodic inspections until further discussions can be held between the two entities.
