A judge recently ordered an Indianapolis dental practice and a human resources manager to pay more than $22,000 in back wages and damages to a former employee.
An investigation by the Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division found that Urgent Dental Center Avon violated the Fair Labor Standards Act by retaliating against an employee who filed a complaint alleging wage violations.
After filing the complaint, the employee received an increase in disciplinary write ups and was wrongfully terminated. Management also made negative comments about the employee to other employees, according to a Sept. 7 news release.
The practice and the HR manager were ordered to pay the former employee $12,160 in back wages and liquidated damages, as well as $10,000 in punitive damages.
