A Louisiana dental practice was hit with a data breach earlier this year affecting 9,703 patients.
Associates in Pediatric Dentistry, which has four offices in the state, said on its website that it launched an investigation after experiencing unusual activity in its email system. It determined that certain email accounts were accessed without authorization between Jan. 27 and Feb. 8. Some emails and attachments with patient information may have also been viewed or copied, the practice said. The patient information may have included identifying information, treatment information or health insurance information.
The practice said it has implemented additional security measures and notified patients whose information may have been involved in the breach.
The practice reported the incident to the Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights Aug. 25.
Cole & Van Note, a consumer rights law firm, said Sept. 5 it launched an investigation into the practice as a result of the data breach.
