High Point (N.C.) University’s Workman School of Dental Medicine was accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation Aug. 24.
The university announced its plans for the dental school in May 2021. It will be the third dental school in the state and the first among private schools. Scott De Rossi, DMD, is the school's founding dean.
The university said in an Aug. 30 news release that nearly 1,000 people have applied to be in the first class of students. The first cohort will begin in the fall of 2024.
HPU also hosts a network of dental practices across the state and expects to open additional practices in the future. Students will be able to train at the practices under the guidance of dentists. Additionally, the school is installing SIMtoCARE dental units as part of its goal to create the world's largest simulation lab.
