The American Dental Association is part of a 40-member coalition that is providing support for the Resident Education Deferred Interest Act.
The act would allow dentists to qualify for interest-free deferment on their student loans while in a dental residency or internship program, according to a June 8 news release from the ADA.
Providing dentists with the option to have interest-free deferment would allow more dentists to practice in underserved and rural areas, where there is currently a lack of dentists.
The Resident Education Deferred Interest Act was introduced in both the House of Representatives and Senate last year.
The coalition, led by the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, includes organizations that represent both dentists and physicians, the release said.
