The University of Utah in Salt Lake City is set to have a first-of-a-kind graduate from its School of Dentistry, according to a May 12 report by CBS affiliate KUTV.
Janice Darko, an immigrant from Ghana, will be the first Black female graduate in the dental school's 10-year history.
Bart Watts, DDS, an associate instructor at the School of Dentistry, encouraged other students of color to apply to the school.
Ms. Darko also created an art display to promote and celebrate other cultures and backgrounds at the dental school.
"This is bigger than me," she told KUTV. "This is not just about me. This is about representing my community."
