Researchers at the New York City-based NYU College of Dentistry in New York City earned a $2.3 million grant renewal.
The funding will aid the research of how genetic diseases, such as Down syndrome, impact mitochondria, leading to defects in the formation of tooth enamel, according to an April 7 news release shared with Becker's.
The research team is led by Rodrigo Lacruz, PhD, a professor of molecular pathobiology at the dental school.
The grant comes from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, a branch of the National Institutes of Health, and will be disbursed over five years, the release said.
