The Medication Access and Training Expansion Act requires dentists to complete eight hours of education and training before they can receive or renew their registration with the Drug Enforcement Administration.
Here are four things from the ADA dentists need to know about the new law:
1. The training requirement only applies to dentists who need a DEA registration to prescribe controlled substances from schedules 2, 3, 4 and 5.
2. Dentists only need to complete the eight hours of training once.
3. For those who are less than five years out of dental school, relevant coursework will count toward the eight hours.
4. The deadline for completing the training is based on when the dentist first obtains or renews their registration.
